Saturday Inspiration

Daniela at Aesthetic Oiseau posted yesterday on this incredible pagoda fireplace above. Wow. It is in the lobby of the Hotel Monaco in Portland. It reminds me of this pagoda door from a 2005 issue of House Beautiful. Do you think Danika at O'verlays/Gorgeous Shiny Things could fabricate something like this? Or perhaps Linda at Calling It Home? I love the contrast of the crisp white against the Chinese red walls - stunning.

Chinese Red for My Office Makeover

Benjamin Moore Chili Pepper 2004-20

A client's powder room we painted in Chili Pepper

I have decided to paint the walls in my office Chinese red. Red is a hard color to get right. I want a really really deep coral that is not too blue and not too orange - a nice balance of pink and orange and red. These are the two reds that I go to time and time again. The painter is coming Tuesday, so I will decide over the weekend.

Chili Pepper -
"This is a really deep coral, kind of like a cheerful Chinese red. Pinks and reds to me are synonymous with frozen drinks and relaxing." - Richard Mishaan from House Beautiful

Blazer -
"It's exciting and it has a historical reference: the Greek vases, the palace at Knossos, and all that business. I love red, always have, always will. Either you like steak or you like hamburgers." - David Easton from House Beautiful

Navy Nursery Inspiration Boards

Yesterday we looked at an inspiration board for a Chinoiserie Chic nursery for a baby girl with my color of the year navy. This inspiration board is for a nursery for a baby boy with stylish parents. It features blue elephant wallpaper, the same navy crib I used yesterday in the baby girl's nursery to show how it can be used for a boy or a girl, navy and white striped wing chairs piped in red (Furbish), navy dupioni silk curtains, a red pagoda cabinet, a vintage palm chandelier spray painted Chinese red, an elephant step stool, and a child's size Chinese red Ming Dynasty chair. Note how the use of round bulbs in the chandelier gives it a more fun and young vibe - a great tip to borrow. I love the idea of a pair of wing chairs so both Mom and Dad can hang out in the nursery.

Here is an alternative version using many of the same pieces including the crib with navy blue linen but with more use of red with the additions of the Scalamandre Zebras wallpaper, red silk lampshades, and Ikea Lack side tables.

A Chinoiserie Christmas - DIY Red

What room couldn't use a pop of Chinese red Chinoiserie? Perhaps you have a great vintage Chinoiserie piece from Craigslist, eBay, Etsy, or a flea market? Spray paint it red for a wonderful focal point in any room. I especially like Rustoleum Lacquer in Chinese Red. My Christmas decorating posts to date -
