What could be easier or prettier than filling a blue and white Chinese bowl with Christmas ornaments? Add some boxwood cuttings or magnolia leaves if you like.

Blue and White Christmas Preview

Carolyne Roehm
Tomorrow, December 2nd, The Pink Pagoda is hosting her third Blue and White Bash Linking Party. You just pop over tomorrow and link up with any blue and white post you have done. You can also create a special blue and white post for tomorrow. With the holidays just around the corner, Jennifer is hoping for some holiday or winter themed posts, but all blue and white posts are most welcome. If you are new to the Blue and White Bash Linking Party, here is the first and the second.

I have created a very special post for tomorrow on A Blue and White Chinoiserie Christmas. I promise you will find inspiration galore on combining blue and white, Chinoiserie, and Christmas decor - what could be prettier?

Here is a sneak peek. These blue and white ginger jar ornaments are on a 25% off Black Friday sale through TODAY.

I love the idea of a centerpiece of blue and white Chinese porcelain filled with green apples. I haven't found a source for this exact bowl, but I found another one I love below available at Biscuit here. At 13" wide, it is a perfect size for a centerpiece for the dining table or sideboard.

Now go get that post ready for tomorrow and come join in the fun. No blue and white post? Well just pop over to The Pink Pagoda tomorrow. It will get you in the holiday spirit. Jennifer has promised photos of how she uses blue and white in her own home for the holidays.

My own blue and white Christmas decorating is in full swing too!

The Easy Peasy Chinoiserie Chic Christmas Tree

We began our month of Chinoiserie Chic holiday decorating yesterday with a look at Meg Braff's wonderful Chinoiserie dining room decorated for the holidays. You can read it here -

Holiday Decorating at Chinoiserie Chic

Today we look at the bonsai Christmas tree. Not everyone has the space, time, energy, or desire to put up a big Christmas tree. Or perhaps you put up a big tree, but would like a smaller one for a dining room table centerpiece, the entryway, the coffee table, or to display very special ornaments.

Some of you may remember this fantastic bonsai Christmas tree from the December 2009 Martha Stewart Living. It involves taking an artificial bonsai tree, spray painting it with gold paint, dusting it with gold glitter, and adding lantern ornaments and birds. Here are the details if you'd like to create it yourself.

Asian-Inspired Christmas Tree

Who says Christmas trees have to be fir? Inspired by the bonsai collection at the Arnold Arboretum in his native Boston, Martha Stewart Living's Kevin Sharkey created this enchanting roost using an artificial bonsai.

Spray-painted gold and accented with glitter, it rises out of a traditional pot topped with moss and snow. Japanese-lantern ornaments provide a pleasing change of scale, but the crowning glories of this tree are the birds -- coated in glitter and grouped in flocks of like colors.

The crowning glories of our Asian-Inspired Christmas Tree are the birds -- coated in glitter and grouped in flocks of like colors.
Tools and Materials
Birds: B&J Florist Supply
Fine glitter: Martha Stewart Crafts, from Michaels
Shard-glass glitter: artglitter.com

How-To
1. Working in sections, paint artificial bird body with white craft glue.
2. Hold bird over bowl of fine glitter; use a spoon to sprinkle with glitter.
3. Repeat process for bird tail, using shard-glass glitter for texture.

Here's an even easier one - just hang a few choice ornaments from an artificial bonsai tree.

And here are my new favorite Chinoiserie bonsai Christmas tree ideas this year from ZGallerie.  Buy one of these beauties in silver or gold, hang some favorite ornaments, and you're done. I'm thinking one of these might be perfect for my very special collection of Jay Strongwater ornaments.

Holiday Decorating at Chinoiserie Chic

Every year the shelter magazines have less and less in the way of Christmas/holiday decorating. Another example of political correctness, I assume. I'm glad I kept so many old December issues of House & Garden, House Beautiful, and Southern Accents for inspiration. Not all magazines today fall in this category - magazines like Traditional Home, Southern Living, and Veranda still do a great job of showing homes all decked out for the holidays.

The photo above is Meg Braff, of course, in the December issue of Southern Living in her wonderful Chinoiserie dining room. Some great ideas to copy - red glassware, red chandelier shades, red hurricanes on the mantel, and red roses. I love the magnolia garland on the fireplace and the yellow tulipieres with red roses. And let's bring back the hostess gown! My mother and I always wore matching hostess gowns for the holidays when I was growing up. Society Social has them in red and green here.

Since Thanksgiving falls so late this year, we are starting today on Chinoiserie Chic with a whole month of decorating your home for the holidays. I hope this will be your go to source for decorating your home this holiday season with Chinoiserie Chic, Palm Beach Chic, and Hollywood Regency style.

I have booked the same photographer who did the wonderful photos of my One Room Challenge laundry room to come over in a couple of weeks to do a photo shoot of my own decorations to share with all of you. I will also be sharing my Chinoiserie decorating tips on my Chinoiserie Christmas Pinterest board, my December Houzz Ideabook, and over at The Pink Pagoda's Blue and White Bash on December 2ND.

A Girly Chinoiserie Christmas Tree

Tobi Fairley
I love this whimsical and colorful Christmas tree from Tobi Fairley. My daughter is planning a Christmas tree this year in these colors with Chinoiserie touches and I sent her this photo for inspiration. Monkeys and ornaments in pink, orange, green, and turquoise are a wonderful combination. Here are my holiday decorating posts to date. I used to love the December issues of the shelter magazines for Christmas decorating ideas, but most have completely stopped. Don't worry, we are in full holiday decorating throttle here.
