#9 - The Top Ten Chinoiserie Trends for 2014

I am thrilled to welcome Jennifer of The Pink Pagoda to talk about my #9 Chinoiserie Trend for 2014 - Blue and White Chinese porcelain. Blue and white Chinese porcelain is always in style, but lately it has taken center stage, gracing virtually every beautiful room you see. This trend will continue to be very strong in 2014.

Jennifer is my go-to source for blue and white inspiration. Her blog The Pink Pagoda, as you all know, is a wonderful resource for inspiration on decorating with blue and white. Jennifer has a gorgeous post each Monday aptly named Blue and White Monday. Several months ago, she started her Blue and White Bash Linking Party inviting all of us to link up with our own blue and white posts. Her Etsy store is filled with blue and white giclees that are a huge hit in the interior design world.

Her accessories store is my favorite source on the internet for stunning blue and white Chinese porcelain pieces. And Jennifer has just added a "Walls" section where she will be selling original works of art by several artists including Kerry Steele. These pieces are originals and exclusive to The Pink Pagoda, and will either feature blue and white Chinese porcelain or be designed to work perfectly with blue and white Chinese porcelain. What an amazing idea!

Now sit back with a cup of coffee or tea on this brisk winter morning and enjoy Jennifer's insights on blue and white for 2014. Thanks so much Jennifer!

I'm loving this series on Chinoiserie trends for 2014, Beth!  Blue and white has never been out, but it's definitely been on the upswing for a couple of years, and there's no end in sight.

I'm noticing blue and white used at more weddings and parties.  In fact, I'm receiving large orders from customers who will use vases, jars and planters at their events.

Using blue and white on the table has become more popular than ever. Besides big statement jars in the center of the table, smaller pieces scattered with blooms are beautiful, and I'm seeing so much of this look.

I can't keep this ginger jar in stock.  I've just recently gotten some in, but they won't last long.

While the taller jar remains highly sought after, the melon jar is gaining in popularity.  I'm seeing it more and more online and in magazines, and I love it.  A collection looks stunning in bookcases and the smaller ones can be taken out and used on the table, too.

When I first opened my shop, ginger jars were clearly the most popular.  Now, I'm seeing customers purchasing more planters and bowls.

Orchids planted in a large bowl are always a show stopper.

My faux green apples are lower maintenance, though : )

Are you noticing all the incredible photos in magazines, on blogs and on Pinterest of all the blue and white with florals?  I'm seeing more and more which I'm so very much enjoying.  Below are a few of mine.

All of the beautiful flowers in blue and white I'm seeing everywhere gave me the idea to ask my artist friend Kerry Steele to create these watercolors for my customers.  They flew out of my shop in just a few hours, and she's busy painting more.

Thank you for allowing me to share my blue and white observations, Beth!

Saturday Inspiration - Preppy Chinoiserie

I'm in love with this room done by the mother and daughter interior design team The Rinfret Group. This is from the American Heart Association show house. I love the traditional, modern, preppy, Chinoiserie vibe - just my style. It pretty much checks all the boxes for me -

Blue and white
Pink
Zebra
Leopard
Greek key
Ginger jars
Chinoiserie toile
Pagoda
Chinese lantern
Quatrefoil

Pretty, pretty, pretty, right?

One Room Challenge Revealed

I hope none of you missed the reveal of my laundry room and all the other participants yesterday. If you did, click here. I hate to see the One Room Challenge come to an end and I have a wonderful idea. Over the next week, we are going to have a One Room Challenge series here at Chinoiserie Chic. I will reveal my sources, delve into some of my design features, and feature some of my favorite rooms of the other participants as well as my favorites of the One Room Challenge linking participants.

Today we look at my umbrella stands. This stunning umbrella stand is available at The Pink Pagoda. I decided to use it for vintage sports equipment of mine. It holds my tennis racquet and my badminton racquet from my days at camp in Wisconsin. I spent 10 years going to 7 week sleep away camp in the summers and even became a counselor in training and then a counselor. These racquets hold very fond memories. The tennis racquet is housed in a vintage Louis Vuitton tennis racquet cover. The umbrella stand also holds vintage polo mallets. These were picked up on eBay several years ago and I previously displayed them in a large ginger jar in the family room.

I also use a large ginger jar I already owned for umbrellas. This is the entrance we use to walk Izzy, so it is very handy to have umbrellas at the ready for rainy dog walks. I have a pair of blue and white striped old school umbrellas I ordered from London and a beautiful pair of black umbrellas lined in orange.

Here is more inspiration on blue and white Chinese porcelain umbrella stands and how to display them. Note that large vases and large ginger jars work beautifully too. The Pink Pagoda has some great choices like this large vase here.

Today is the finale for the One Room Challenge Linking Participants and there are some great rooms. Go check it out.

One Room Challenge Finale

Welcome and thanks so much for joining me for the One Room Challenge reveal. First, I would like to thank our fearless leader and den mother Linda of Calling It Home for all the time and effort she puts into making these a success. I would also like to thank Jennifer of The Pink Pagoda for her beautiful graphics work.

If you have been following along these past 6 weeks, I decided to choose my very shabby laundry room with its 30 year old washer and dryer for a makeover. To start from the beginning of this makeover, click here. For those of you who are followers of Chinoiserie Chic, you know I love Chinoiserie, blue and white, and beautiful things. I am not a minimalist. I wanted my laundry room to be an elegant, inviting, and multi-functional space for laundry, sewing, ironing, crafts, flower arranging, and such. I included things I love -

*beautiful wallpaper
*lots of blue and white
*blue and white Chinese porcelain ginger jars, a garden stool, vases, and umbrella stand
*vintage and antique pieces
*a mix of high and low end including Brunschwig & Fils, Clarence House, Louis Vuitton, Target, and Ikea
*a dupioni silk roman shade
*an original abstract work of art
*whimsical pieces

Believe it or not, this room was done on a budget, with lots of great finds from eBay, consignment stores, Target, Ikea, my own home, and the generosity of my sponsors and supporters of Chinoiserie Chic. I kept the existing flooring, laundry sink, and cabinets. My only big purchase was a new washer and dryer, but the old ones were 30 years old and had lived a good life. ;-)

So please sit back and enjoy these gorgeous photos. I decided to have the room professionally photographed and the results are amazing. If you are in the DC metro area and need a photographer for photos of a new baby, a family portrait, engagement, your home, or whatever - Crystal was fabulous to work with. This is her website and her blog with her info.

A special thank you to the following for providing beautiful pieces for my laundry room -

I hope you enjoyed my laundry room makeover. I could not be happier with it. I also hope that I have demonstrated that a laundry room can be as stylish as any other room in your house, whatever your definition of style is. Now I am excited to go see everyone else's finished rooms.
